Transitioning Your Skincare from Winter to Spring: How to Reset Your Routine
Share
Have you noticed the flowers blooming along the streets as you stroll to work or drop the kids off at school?
Spring is finally starting to show up — the days are getting longer, the air is warming up, and you might even be reaching for lighter layers again.
But while you're switching up your wardrobe, your skin may be ready for a little change too.
The rich moisturiser that felt perfect through winter might suddenly feel a little too heavy. Your skin may be oilier, sweatier, or more prone to congestion. That doesn't mean you need to replace your entire skincare routine.
It simply means it's time to check in with your skin and see what it needs now.
Here's how to make the shift without overcomplicating your skincare.
1. Your Moisturiser
One of the first things you may notice as the weather warms up is that your moisturiser feels different on your skin.
A rich cream that was comforting during a cold, dry winter may start to feel heavy or leave you feeling greasy during the day. If that's happening, consider switching to a lighter lotion, gel-cream or emulsion for your daytime routine.
Look for hydrating ingredients such as:
- Hyaluronic acid to help attract and retain water
- Glycerin for lightweight hydration
- Panthenol to support comfortable, hydrated skin
- Niacinamide for hydration and overall skin support
You don't necessarily have to retire your winter moisturiser, either.
Try using your richer cream at night and a lighter moisturiser during the day.
This gives you hydration without making your daytime routine feel unnecessarily heavy.
2. Don't Go Overboard with Exfoliation
Spring often comes with the temptation to scrub away all that winter dullness — but your skin doesn't need a scrubbing marathon.
If your skin feels rough or looks dull, a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week can help improve the appearance of uneven texture. A mild AHA such as lactic acid is one option.
And if you're already using an exfoliating acid or retinoid? You may not need to add anything new.
The goal is smoother skin — not stripped skin.
3. Make SPF a Non-Negotiable
If there's one part of your routine that shouldn't be seasonal, it's sunscreen.
UV exposure occurs throughout the year, even during winter. As we move into spring and spend more time outdoors, daily sun protection becomes even more important.
For everyday use, look for a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen that you enjoy wearing and can apply generously.
And remember: SPF in a moisturiser or makeup product doesn't necessarily replace your dedicated sunscreen step, particularly if you're relying on it for your primary sun protection.
The best sunscreen is one you'll actually use every day.
Let Your Skin Tell You What to Change
There's no universal “spring skincare routine.”
Some skin will become oilier and more congested as temperatures rise. Other skin may remain dry and sensitive.
Use your skin as your guide.
Feeling dry? Keep your richer moisturiser and focus on hydration.
Feeling oily or heavy? Try fewer layers or a lighter moisturiser.
Looking dull? Consider gentle exfoliation or a brightening product.
Feeling sensitive? Keep things simple and avoid adding more actives.
The goal isn't to have a completely different routine every season.
It's to make small adjustments when your skin actually needs them.
Your Skin Doesn't Need a Spring Makeover
Seasonal skincare doesn't have to mean buying a whole new routine.
Start with the basics: reassess your moisturiser, be mindful with exfoliation and make SPF 50+ a daily essential.
Your serums and other treatments? If they're working for your skin, keep using them.
Because sometimes the best skincare change is simply knowing what not to change.
It's the one that fits what your skin needs now.
